You've probably heard of the importance of your gut health. Apart from the digestive function, the provision of nutrients and vitamins and the elimination of digested food, the intestine also contains an important component of our immune system. 

Therefore, the health of your gut is extremely important and crucial for your health and well-being! The gut deserves very special attention, which is why in this article we'll cover all the important questions about intestinal health, gut flora balance and probiotics.

1. What are probiotics?

Did you know that about 2 kg of bacteria live in your body? 

This may sound strange at first. But good probiotic bacteria are very important for our body.  99% of the bacteria live in the intestine. Here they ensure a balanced bacterial equilibrium and promote well-being.  The totality of all microorganisms that live in our intestines is called intestinal flora.

It is estimated that  more than 500 different species of bacteria with a total number of 100 trillion bacteria live in our intestines. The healthy human intestinal flora consists mainly of eubacteria, bacteroides, anaerobically growing cocci, bifdidus bacteria and lactobacilli.

70% of all immune cells are located in the small and large intestine. This makes the intestine an incredible important part of our immune system.  If the intestine is healthy, we are better protected against many different diseases.

A healthy intestinal flora is important for:

  • Intestinal peristalsis
  • Immune modulation
  • The production of short-chain fatty acids
  • The supply of vitamins
  • Physical and mental performance

Probiotics can be useful in maintaining a healthy balance. They are living microorganisms that occur naturally, especially in fermented foods. They belong to the "good" intestinal bacteria. This means that with their help, it has been proven that  an existing imbalance in the intestine can be brought back into order. They support the regeneration of the intestinal flora and intestinal health. 

2. How do probiotics act in the body?

Probiotic bacteria have a  positive effect on the immune system and contribute to  healthy digestion. The metabolism of intestinal bacteria supports the digestion of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Through them, components can be extracted from food and indigestible components fermented. 

They influence the amount of energy and nutrients the body absorbs. Intestinal bacteria are also responsible for the following tasks:

  • The formation of vitamin B12, butyric acid and vitamin K2
  • The elimination of bad bacteria, yeasts and fungi
  • Producing enzymes that eliminate harmful bacteria
  • Stimulating the release of immunoglobulin G (IgA) antibodies and regulatory T cells.

In addition, the probiotic strains support  the barrier function of the intestinal wall. This means that the passage of unwanted substances and germs from the intestine into the body is prevented.

5. What's the difference between probiotics and prebiotics?

Sounds confusingly similar, but prebiotics, unlike probiotics, are not living microorganisms, but  indigestible dietary fibre.

While the rest of the body finds no benefit in prebiotics, the healthy intestinal bacteria are all the happier for it. This is because prebiotics ensure that the intestinal bacteria develop magnificently and thus also remain healthy and useful. Prebiotics include, for example, the dietary fibres inulin and oligofructose. They are found, for example, in numerous fruits and vegetables as well as legumes.
